2008 PIANO & GUITAR CAMP SCHEDULE

Piano and Guitar Lessons

Sound Steps is Dallas’ premier choice for instrumental lessons because we bring the lessons to you.
All lessons are held in your home, at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church, or at St. Thomas Aquinas Church.

What is the best age to begin? Entering 1st grade and older.

Can a child younger than 6 years old take lessons? We strongly recommend waiting until a child has completed Kindergarten for a variety of reasons. Exceptions are sometimes made, but generally there are no advantages to starting earlier. Younger children should join an age appropriate Kindermusik class.

Are there any prerequisites? We strongly recommend your child take at least 2 semesters of "Kindermusik for the Young Child" first. It is the ideal preparation for learning an instrument: It is fun, age-appropriate, and has a wealth of musical learning, including reading and writing melodies and rhythm, and basic keyboard, string, and wind instrument playing. Children do not have to be frustrated by trying to read music and simultaneously play an instrument before they're developmentally ready.

Our teachers can accommodate children of all ability levels: young beginner to very advanced.

How do we pay? Our preferred payment method is MasterCard or Visa. In September, we will provide you with a credit card authorization form on which you will indicate if you wish to be charged one time or monthly. Your September charges (either one-time or monthly) will include registration fee and optional in-home lesson fee. View payment information.

Do we need a piano/guitar at home? Sound Steps can provide inexpensive used child-sized guitars and keyboards for rental or purchase.

For piano students: A piano at home is recommended, but not required. If there is not a piano at home, the child will need a keyboard for the first 2 years of lessons. In this case, we recommend attending lessons at one of the churches so the child has the opportunity to play an acoustic piano regularly.
For guitar students: A guitar is required.

What will my child learn? Students will learn to play, read, write, and create music. Repertoire is chosen for the needs of each student. Classical literature & traditional technique are emphasized; however, there is also the opportunity to learn popular music & improvisation at all levels.

Will there be recitals? Each year, we have a holiday program and an end of the year recital. We ask each student to prepare 1-3 pieces for the programs and attend the two events, but the child may choose not to perform at the event. The holiday program is held at an area retirement home. The end-of-year recital is held at St. Thomas Aquinas.

Who will our teacher be? We have a variety of teachers and their teaching schedule and students are determined by their availability which may change from year to year. All teachers are experienced in teaching piano and have been trained by Lisa Muratore, owner of Sound Steps. Their qualifications vary, but all have played piano for more than 10 years, some for hobby, some professionally.
All Sound Steps teachers undergo background checks and safe environment training anually.

Where are lessons held? Lessons may be in your home, at Our Redeemer Lutheran, or St. Thomas Aquinas. There is an additional fee for in-home lessons. All lessons will be scheduled according to Sound Steps’ teacher’s schedule. In-home locations must be in one of the following areas of Dallas: Lakewood, Lake Highlands, Preston Hollow, Park Cities, North Dallas--south of LBJ, or Kessler/Stevens Park.

Does the parent need to be present for lessons?
We strongly recommend parents (or other caregivers) attend lessons in order to take an active role in your child's learning.
In-home lessons: A responsible adult must be at home during all home lessons.
Lessons at St. Thomas Aquinas and Our Redeemer Lutheran: Parent/adult attendance is not required but we strongly encourage a responsible adult to attend.

It’s so much more than music…

Learning an instrument:

· strengthens hand-eye

  coordination

· builds discipline

  through regular practice

· encourages creativity
· improves spatial

  awareness

· develops and refines

  math skills
· builds overall musical

  skill and appreciation
· nurtures self-esteem

The research confirms it:
· Music lessons have
   been proven to enhance
   academic performance
   in other areas.
·  Students with music as
   part of their education
   score at least 50 points
   higher on the SAT than
   those without.
· Children taught to play
   classical music for up to
   five years scored
   significantly higher in
   verbal memory tests
   than children with no
   musical training.
·  Research indicates
   that music instruction
   surpasses computer
   instruction in
   developing children’s
   abstract reasoning
   skills.
